The Marianas

Experience natural beauty and deep-rooted traditions in a truly unique island paradise.

The Marianas – or formally, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands – is a stunning archipelago in the Western Pacific, consisting of 14 islands each with its unique charm and natural beauty. Spanning over 400 miles from north to south, The Marianas is renowned for its lush landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant marine life. The islands, including Saipan, Tinian, and Rota, are the more populated and well-known, while the Northern Islands offer a more rugged and untouched wilderness, perfect for adventurous souls seeking an escape from the ordinary.

A Rich Culture

The Marianas is rich in cultural heritage, predominantly shaped by the indigenous Chamorro and Carolinian peoples. The Chamorros, who have inhabited these islands for over 3,500 years, have a deep-rooted culture evident in their traditional dance, music, and crafts. The Carolinians, who migrated from the Caroline Islands, brought with them seafaring skills and navigational knowledge, enhancing the cultural mosaic of The Marianas. Together these cultures – along with over 20 others from around the world who make the islands home – celebrate a blend of ancient traditions and modern influences, visible in the islands’ festivals, cuisine, and community life.

History

Remnants of ancient Chamorro settlements, such as the iconic latte stones, stand alongside war relics, offering a poignant juxtaposition of the islands’ ancient and modern histories. Historically, The Marianas has been a site of significant events, particularly during World War II. The islands witnessed fierce battles, most notably the Battle of Saipan in 1944, which was a turning point in the Pacific Theater.  This rich historical tapestry, combined with the enduring spirit of the Chamorro and Carolinian cultures, makes The Marianas a fascinating destination for those interested in both natural beauty and profound historical narratives.

Festivals & Culture Events

Throughout the year, a variety of festivals celebrate Chamorro, Carolinian and international cultural traditions in song, dance, crafts and food. For more information on upcoming events, visit The Marianas Calendar.
