The island of Rota proudly presents the revival of the Sweet Potato Festival, originally introduced in 2011 during Mayor Melchor Mendiola’s administration. Now expanded to highlight both the sweet potato and the coconut tree—two culturally and agriculturally significant resources in The Marianas—the festival honors their historical role in local sustainability, nutrition, and tradition.
This year’s event features a variety of competitions including a fashion show, pie-eating contest, and the traditional Umang (Hermit Crab) Race. The festival will also include educational demonstrations aimed at raising awareness of traditional farming, food preparation, and the cultural value of these important island crops.
