October 6 @ 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm
The newest addition to the list of signature events in The Marianas, the Marianas Beer &BBQ Festival highlights two of the most popular necessities for a fun island style vacation – barbecue and beer! This one-night event is themed after famous beer and food festivals found throughout the world with festivalgoers savoring beer, wine and BBQ samples in commemorative gear perfect for souvenirs. Festival Mascot, “Sir Besa” patrols the festival grounds as the community enjoys fresh made barbecue and craft beers brewed locally in The Marianas and elsewhere.
It’s round 2 for the Marianas Beer & BBQ Festival on Oct. 6, 2018, in Saipan. The festival, organized by the Marianas Visitors Authority, will pair Marianas brews with island-style barbecue and other appetizers beside the Saipan lagoon at Garapan Fishing Base.
The festival is scheduled from 5-11 p.m. and will feature a new 2018 signature beer glass that patrons can use throughout the event and keep as a souvenir. The event will be open to the public but only adults age 21 and older will be allowed to consume alcohol (21 is the legal drinking age in The Marianas). Slated to participate are Saipan Brewing Co, which manufactures the only locally brewed beer in The Marianas, and other companies are anticipated to join.
This year’s festival will again include the participation of Taiwan’s famous Fourplay Cuisine & Bar. Last year owners/bartenders Frankie Hong and Kenny Shih debuted exclusive beer cocktails themed after each main island in The Marianas – Saipan Blue, Tinian Red and Rota Green. A new signature beer cocktail for the event is anticipated to debut at this year’s festival, and a highlight of the night will be shots created by the bar owners based on personal inspiration provided by each consumer.
The Beer-lympics from 8-9 p.m. will welcome up to 10 teams of four participants each that will compete in a series of obstacles or stages. Prizes will be $200 worth of festival tokens for 1st place, $150 worth of festival tokens for 2nd place, and $100 of festival tokens for 3rd place.
The Chun Ji BBQ Short Ribs Cook-off will challenge six teams of one or two participants to prepare on site from the best tasting and best plated ribs, served with two side dishes. The competition will be from 5-6 p.m. and contestants must provide their own grill, charcoal, ingredients, and other necessities. Prizes will be $50 worth of festival tokens for 1st place, $40 worth of festival tokens for 2nd place, and $30 of festival tokens for 3rd place.
Winners will also receive giveaways from the MVA, and participants will be selected by the MVA. Complete rules, applications, and waiver forms are available on The Marianas Calendar at www.mymarianas.com.
Individuals must purchase a package to consume alcohol. The legal drinking age in The Marianas is 21. The $25 package includes two 12 oz. servings of beer or wine; two 4 oz. samples of beer or wine; one chaser, and an official Marianas Beer & BBQ Festival collectible beer glass.
