UPDATE Mar. 30, 2020: Gilita Chamorro Festival is CANCELLED.

Rota (Luta) is well known for its unique and preserved cultural practices and traditions. The Municipality of Rota together with its sponsors will host its Annual Gilita Chamorro Festival. This 3 day program features educational and cultural aspects that provide our tourists with a glimpse of the various traditional methods that contribute to the lifestyle of our local people.

There will be an Amot (Medicine) Tour at Hatdin Amot Chamorro on April 23 and April 24 that features various demonstrations of medicine making that heals different ailments, as well as cooking demonstration such as the famous coconut oil, delicious titiyas and apigigi (coconut dessert); and finally weaving to teach our visitors various ways of making beautiful decorations out of coconut leaves. On April 24, there will be a showcase of talent and strength at Joaquin (Tun Kindu) Ogo baseball field featuring our Ansianu na gilita (Warrior’s Challenge) that invites our locals and visitors to partake in a competition featuring different categories to test their speed, strength, and agility. On April 25, There will also be our Sinot yan Sinora Gilita Competition held at Joaquin (Tun Kindu) Ogo Baseball Field as well to feature our youth to demonstrate their ability to speak in the vernacular language (Chamorro) along with a costume that best represents our Chamorro culture. There will be cultural games and entertainment on site for people to compete in and enjoy; vendors will also be on site to sell local delicious dishes.
