Saipan's two newest championship courses spread across the Kagman Peninsula at the Greg Norman Design LaoLao Bay Golf Resort. The 6,300 yard West Course is a classically designed golf course; bad shots are penalized, but well-placed shots are rewarded with a low score.
The West Course is entirely inland, with a panoramic view of Mt. Tapotchao and the Kagman Valley serving as a dramatic backdrop to most of the course. Play is especially affected by the winds, adding to the difficulty and dramatically changing the character of the course.
The East Course at LaoLao is an outstanding tourist course. It is very short, a mere 5,900 yards but with breathtaking views, especially on the six holes along the cliff-line coast of LaoLao Bay. The views from these cliffs are as spectacular as a golfer will find anywhere in the world, comparable in beauty to the world-renown Pebble Beach.
Because it is very short, every golfer has a good chance at a great score on the East Course. It is tight, though, with the indigenous limestone forest of the peninsula lining each hole, so inconsistent shots may still result in a high score at the end of the round.
All of the championship courses require that players use carts, but the cost is included in the greens fees. In addition, players should be aware that although the island lifestyle is laid-back, Saipan's golf resorts require the same punctuality that is expected at golf clubs throughout the world; if a player is late, his/her tee-time will probably be forfeited. Finally, the resorts require proper attire of all players, so tank tops and flip-flops are best left at home.
